The Riad

A restored merchant's house in the Marrakesh medina

The house

Riad Mimoun was built around 1880 for a family of leather merchants, its rooms turned inward to a courtyard as every medina house is. By 2016 the fountain was dry and the cedar doors had been painted over three times.

Over three years, fourteen local artisans brought it back: zellige cut by hand in Fès, tadelakt plaster polished with olive soap, ceilings stripped back to their carved cedar. We kept the house to six rooms so the courtyard stays quiet.

Hospitality here means small things done well: mint tea when you arrive, a hand-drawn map before you leave for the souks, a lantern at your door when you return.

A day at Mimoun

Nothing is scheduled, but most days settle into the same gentle shape.

    08:00

    Breakfast in the courtyard

Warm msemmen, amlou and orange-blossom honey, eggs with cumin, juice pressed from the courtyard trees.

    10:30

    A medina wander

Our hand-drawn map takes you past the Bahia Palace, the spice square and our favourite brass maker. A licensed guide on request.

  3. A candlelit dinner table in the courtyard at night
    20:00

    Dinner under the stars

After sunset on the roof, the courtyard is candlelit and the tagines arrive. Or climb to the Lantern Room for five courses.
